Each week, FRINGE MUSIC FIX culls the latest music video releases, carefully selecting the most bizarre, provocative, and remarkable videos from across the world.

Sit back, relax, and open your mind’s eye; things are about to get interesting. The following are our selections for the week ending March 23rd, 2014.

“God’s Whisper” is the first music video from talented 17 year old Atlanta artist, Raury. The stylish clip, directed by Andrew Donoho, effectively gives the song’s vague lyrics some added context and some insight into Raury’s ideologies on youth empowerment. One may chose to hastily categorize the video as a simple party video, depicting Raury and cohorts dancing, drinking, taking drugs, and setting off fireworks. A deeper analysis would reveal there is certainly some thought provoking depth just below the video’s surface. What resonated with me are the clever parallels between organized religion and youth culture’s party hard lifestyles. To further emphasize the comparison, in the video’s third quarter, the word “church” is defined on-screen as “a public gathering of like minded individuals”.

Elliphant drops a bold and memorable visual for her equally bold track, “Revolusion”. The video sees the Swedish Electro-Pop artist assuming an array of different looks and fashion styles with assistance from some very talented backup dancers and contortionists.

This the second music video for Tove Lo’s infectious track, “Habits”. It was directed by Motellet, and utilizes a SnorriCam that sees Tove Nilsson herself as the focal point and star of the video. In what is a quite literal depiction of the song's subject matter, we accompany Tove Lo through a night of drinking, drug use, and intimate encounters. As the video unravels, it’s quite clear that these “habits” are means in which our antagonist attempts to cope with feelings of sadness and loneliness.

Directors Mihnea Popescu and Olivier Boonjing have fabricated a dark and cinematic video for BRNS’ void. The video tells the tale of an enigmatic man skilfully portrayed by Frederic Evrard, as a man tormented by questions surrounding identity. The theory I've adopted assumes the man suffers from schizophrenia and perhaps his darker half has committed murder. While It seems the clues are laid out, nothing is spoon-fed to us, which could easily lead to many different interpretations of the video. In terms of engaging narratives, “Void” is as riveting as they come.

“Philosophize In It! Chemicalize With It” is a highly visceral and vividly imaginative music video experience that mixes animation with live action sequences. Director Geoff Hoskinson has crafted a wonderful multi-coloured universe populated by dots that are both the makeup of objects like birds, hands, mushrooms, as well as the living inhabitants of his visionary creation. If any music video released this week demands high definition viewing, it’s this one.
