Thom Glunt's Top 10 Music Videos of 2014

Posted by Thom Glunt on December 24, 2014 in Lists

Editor's Note: For our end of the year wrap up, we asked a few filmmakers to compile their own top music video lists. This list was compiled by director Thom Glunt.

Hey Friends,

2014 has been an amazing year. Music videos are back and better than ever!

It’s no secret that music video budgets have dwindled. Even some of the world’s most recognized artists have trouble covering the cost of the videos created to market their amazing music. Don’t worry though, through simple and creative ways altruistic brands have been willing to help. How? With expert subtlety and respect, they've found ways to seamlessly inject marketing into music videos, increasing budgets but without compromising “artistic integrity.” I know it sounds crazy, but I bet you didn't even notice!

So check out my faves of 2014!

"All About You" by Hilary Duff

This video is so flirty fun! It’s classic Hilary. She sneaks hot pics of a hunk using her Amazon Fire® and has to hunt him down after dance practice to get him his record back! What happens next will restore your faith in humanity!

"Anaconda" by Nicki Minaj

Just when I thought Nicki was just another celebrity focused on vanity and fortune she goes out and shoots her next video with the tribes people of the Amazon. It’s videos like this that reminds me that no matter how different I think we are, we’re all just people. Simple people who love to dance to music blasting out of our Beats Pill™ and drink Myx®.

"One Minute More" by Capital Cities

Joy and sorrow are inseparable… same goes with fun and the Sea-Doo Spark® so grab your Nokia Lumia®, call up your best friend and go have fun before your next rainy day.

"Break Free" by Ariana Grande

I can’t say for sure, but this may be the most important feminist video of 2014. It starts with a very sexy and powerful Ariana discovering a group of women entrapped by a patriarchal alien society. She effortlessly breaks them free with the power of dance and then outsmarts some space-bigots, an overly-aggressive male robot, a racist depiction of an asian man and then STILL has enough energy to hit up a space party with Zedd. As if that wasn't enough, she reveals her true bravery when she burns down society’s beauty standards and makes a sexual advance towards an alien hunk who caught her attention with his Beats Pill XL™.

"Let This Last Forever" by Benny Benassi

This is a video that you’ll clear your browsing history after watching… so that your girlfriend doesn’t see all the great presents she’s getting this year! With Puma Classics® and Thinomicks® these smoking babes got great taste in footwear. But wearing sneakers in your bikini isn’t super classy… until you grab a can of Pampelonne-canned Rosé®. But of course this video is only as great as the song it complements, so turn up your RCF® headphones, lay by the pool and enjoy the show!

"Loyal" by Chris Brown

This video is great! Chris Brown’s dancing is so sexy you may have to smoke a cigarette when he’s done… Oh, you’re indoors? Grab your Fantasia E-Hookah® and vape to your heart’s content! Don’t worry, watching isn’t cheating, but don’t let your S.O. find your Ashley Madison® app after you share this video with them!

"Masterpiece" by Jessie J

People… Masterpiece. The name says it all. This video is so finely engineered I thought I was listening to this song while driving my BMW 650i®. If you don’t have a BMW 650i for yourself, grab your Beats Pill XL™ and enjoy the show!

"Wiggle" by Jason Derulo

I got a secret for you. Did you know that Modatoi.com actually has product placement in this video? I didn’t catch it either at first, but if you slow the video down you can catch some quick, subtle shots at 0:29 and 0:35! I admire the elegance of this one, it didn’t put me off. If my Beats Music™ app history is any indication, this was one of my most played jams of 2014!

"We Dem Boyz" by Wiz Kalifa

This video is truly special. I’m sure many of you know this, but let me “lay it down” to the people who may not be real “hip hop heads.” In hip hop, higher numbers are better than lower ones. More money, ladies, houses, cars, etc. often will mean that you are successful and wealthy. So when Beats Music™ heard that Wiz was going to shoot a video with only one shot, they generously added three more… THREE! They upped the shot count 300%, making this video way cooler.

"She Don’t Need to Know" by Yung Jake

Lets get something straight: I can enjoy satire and at times a good goof or two, but I think Yung Jake is making a commentary on the state of music videos in this video, and I don’t watch videos to get preached at. It’s pretty subtle and still really cool BUT with this many great brands in his video they don’t have any room to breathe!

Beats Music™ app, Beats Pill®, Cîroc®, Red Bull®, iPhone 6®, Beats® headphones, Belvedere®, HPNOTIQ®, Viniq®, Nuvo®, Comcast®, Grey Goose®, Patrón®, Gatorade® Cool Blue, Fiji® water... Jake may be young, but he’s sure got great taste! You know what, never mind, this can’t be a joke there are too many great products in this video. #1 for the next 5 years.
