Lance Drake's Favorite Sci Fi/Art Videos of 2014

Posted by Lance Drake on December 23, 2014 in Lists

Editor's Note: For our end of the year wrap up, we asked a few filmmakers to compile their own top music video lists. This list was compiled by director Lance Drake.

I cannot deny that 2014 is the year the ART NERD CORPS awakened, living the electric sheep dream on a total budget less than a days worth of snacking on the set of Interstellar. This is a list of my favorite Sci fi / Art slanted videos and media made this past year in no particular order. I find all these creatives wildly talented and inspiring. Congrats on making the list!

"Monument" by Röyksopp & Robyn

THIS VIDEO. You know when you reference Jim Steranko you are living the art nerd dream. If you don’t know who Jim Steranko is… don’t bother reading the rest of my list.

"Thievery" by Arca

Jesse Kanda is fantastic. When the Taiwanese News Animators become a self aware sentient this will be their interpretation of what REALLY broke the internet in 2014.

"Jewels" by Black Atlass

When is Yoann making a giant feature?

"Iron Sky" by Paolo Nutini

A video so good, I’m convinced it’s a documentary.

Wanderers – Short Film

Wanderer’s isn’t promoting anything, nor is it for sale. This guy made it for the love of SPACE and it shows. By far, one of the best videos I watched online all year.

Alien Isolation: The Game - Short Film

I’m spending the holiday break trying to figure how to transfer my consciousness into an Oculus Rift so I can play this game forever.

"Fame" by The Acid

Fame lives somewhere between Heaven's Gate and "Praise You." Dugan delivered some sweet videos on the comedy tip this year, but never forget that the sci fi force is strong in this Jedi.

Jordan Wolfson (Female Figure 2014)

An animatronic robot that seeks eye contact with you in a mirror while dancing and singing to Blurred Lines and Lady Gaga… When Cyberdyne destroys humanity, the paper trail of the robot revolution will trace back to this piece.

"Dangerous Days" by Zola Jesus

The song title says it all… Zola Jesus is a replicant Bene Gesserit reborn to take the throne as mother nature.

"Never Say Never" by Basement Jaxx feat. ETML

Only Saman could convince a band something so ballsy is the way to go. His level of detail is what makes him one of the best Sci fi directing nerds out there.

"Under the Skin" - Feature Film Directed by Jonathan Glazer

Glazer basically rewrites cinema in his adaptation for Under the Skin. THX for the Jackass generation.

"Ivory" by Movement

Love is a drug. Fleur and Manu have the best casting every time. Los Angeles casting can be painful. Where is this suburban Czech mall that is the mecca of street casting?

Lance Drake is a filmmaker and music video director based in Los Angeles.
