Ian Pons Jewell's Top 10 Music Videos of 2014

Posted by Ian Pons Jewell on December 16, 2014 in Lists

Editor's Note: For our end of the year wrap up, we asked a few music video filmmakers to compile their own top 10 lists. This list was compiled by music video director Ian Pons Jewell.

Well that was damn hard! These are my personal favourites of the year, in no particular order. I found myself putting down a couple videos by one director as I'll see them as a body of work rather than an individual piece, but made a point of trying not to double up. Though I couldn't help it with Tobias Stretch, as I actually had three of his in my list originally. Truly transcendent art. There's some of the obvious bangers of this year with Daniel Wolfe's "Iron Sky," Daniel Askill's "Chandelier," and Hiro Murai's "Never Catch Me"...absolute killer videos. "Iron Sky" knocked me for six for a whole day when I watched it. Haven't ever been so strangely affected emotionally by a music video before. The Leblanc and Cudmore, I had a couple down, with their video for Timbre staying. Beautiful surrealism. Abbie Stephen's video is just amazing, so much heart, and beautifully made all round from the art, camera, structuring. Finally, I just watched Allie Avital Tsypin of BANGS' video for Mutal Benefit. It's technically released in 2013, but dec 10th and it was just recently given a well deserved Vimeo Staff Pick. Full of heart and soul, beautifully crafted, made my eyes water. I think it's a good reflection of this list. It was a hard one writing this, what a year it's been again in the crazy and absurdly high quality/quantity output in music video world! Enjoy!
