Only a couple of days after “Roar” by Katy Perry moved into the top 10 most watched music videos of all time, Katy is back with the release of her latest music video for “This Is How We Do,” directed by Joel Kefali. The video pays homage to modern pop art through colorful vignettes that visually represent the lyrics of the song. “This Is How We Do” starts with a man looking at a painting of Katy in an art gallery, which is appropriate since the video references so many pieces of art and pop culture. The red, blue, and yellow squares reference the De Stijl Dutch art movement from the early 1900s, with the dress acting as a reference to designer Yves Saint Laurent's Mondrian day dress. Our strutting ice cream treats are a reference to the famous 1957 "Let's Go Out To The Lobby" movie theatre snack promo. The floating objects sequences could be a reference to Salvador Dali's series of suspended animation images. Even the male dancers are dressed in grey suits with white shoes and a red bow tie, paying homage to Pee Wee Herman (who also served as inspiration for Joel’s video for “Water Fountain” by tUnE-yArDs). We haven’t been able to find the pop art reference in Katy’s cornrows or pink hair extensions, but we’re sure there is one.

“This Is How We Do” was produced by Jason Colon for Doomsday Entertainment and can be found on the album Prism.
