Top 5 Videos

This week was a remarkable week for music videos that you may not have seen. I was very hard pressed to pick five, but by sticking to the ones which made the most memorable impressions on me, I feel I’ve nailed this week’s most essential viewing. That being said, with this week more than most, please pay special attention to the honourable mentions found below. All of these magnificent videos deserve your attention.

I’m consistently impressed by directors who can format an elaborate and interesting plot into the constraints of a five minute music video. Wolf Alice’s video for "She" unveils what at first may seem like a familiar and predictable tale, but concludes with a twist that you may not see coming. The clue is in the title.

Sometimes a lot can be said for a simple well executed concept. The official video for BREACH’s "Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)" features the well choreographed dance moves of Andreya Triana, who also provides vocals on the track. As the video sets the stage, we are introduced to three versions of Andreya, all wearing a little less clothing than the last. As the song progresses, and more Andreya’s appear, the pattern continues. While this may not end as sexy as you might expect, it is nonetheless a fantastic and engaging dance video that proves that sometimes less is definitely more.

Director Patrick Killingbeck succeeds exceedingly well at matching up the slinky pop of AlunaGeorge’s "Best Be Believing" with an homage to the classic mental hospital themed, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. While this doesn’t immediately sound like a logical pairing, once the dancing begins, it’s a match made it heaven. With a strong nod to one of the best motion pictures ever made, and a fun dance-filled video from an excellent up and coming act, this one’s a must-see.

Poliça are best known for their unique brand of electronic pop music with finds a perfect balance between beauty and darkness. This same fusion can be noted in their music videos. With "Warrior Lord," directing team Isaac Gale and David Jensen have created a dreamy and fluid setting awash with red and pink colour tones that explores themes of bonding, innocence, passion and perhaps of something slightly darker.

Since Tyler, the Creator’s first self-directed music video for "Yonkers" made waves on the web in 2011, the young MC has proven his worth not only on the mic, but also behind the camera. "Tamale" certainly fits perfectly into Tyler’s videography alongside other unforgettable videos for "IFHY," "Domo 23," "She," etc. As the vibrant video begins, we are immediately introduced to Tyler’s floating heads, which quickly segway into a multitude of other surreal images, including the likes of a trampoline booty and Tyler riding oversized cats. Sharing the aesthetic, cynicism, dark comedy and biting social commentary that has become the norm across his work, "Tamale" is one of the most remarkable clips released this year - at least until we get another Wolf Haley joint.
