Top 5 Videos

FRINGE MUSIC FIX’s selections for this week’s most exceptional music videos include dancing in the desert performance art, youthful lust, girlfriend bonding, sensual red wine baths, and a family photograph gone amok. Read on to discover which of this week’s new music videos were the most remarkable.

Beautifully shot in the Joshua Tree desert in California, Nathan Kim’s video for “Intro” by M83 is a performance video that features great choreography and a vibrant and crystal clear pastel colour palette. Kim’s entry was selected as the winner of a collaboration between Genero.tv and M83 to have music videos developed for two tracks from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming: “Intro,” and “Moonchild."

While “Love Natural” is a video that may seem predictable at first, the direction it takes is not quite what we are initially lead to expect, though it is also not very surprising once unveiled. The video introduces us to a young male antagonist who immediately becomes infatuated with two slightly older girls. When they are made aware of his presence, the trio join forces, and amicable fun ensues. Or does it?

The video for The Darcys’ “Itchy Blood” is a sleek one that grants its viewer an intimate glimpse into the magical world of BFFs, and the things BFFs might do when parents and boys aren’t around. It’s probably a nostalgia-inducing ordeal for most girls, however I felt amazed and enlightened by the whole spectacular thing. Now if I only knew why girls go to the bathroom together.

Magnus Härdner directs this sensual and stylish music video for Say Lou Lou’s “Better In The Dark." The gothic veiled video features extraordinarily attractive and fashionable people, ominous undertones, a vein of sinister intent, and lots of red wine or blood - or both red wine and blood.

Director Allie Avital Tsypin makes my weekly top 5 for the second time since this column's debut with her mesmerizing video for Mutual Benefit’s “Advanced Falconry.” The first time her work caught my eye was her excellent video for Autre Ne Veut’s “Ego Free Sex Free." “Advanced Falconry” takes us behind the scenes of a family photograph session that plays out like many of these sessions probably do, amidst states of dysfunction and sibling rivalry. The video builds slow, but will reward patient viewers. It truly is an engaging and at times hilarious experience to observe the strikingly expressive faces of the family as tensions build in slow motion. I’ve already been back to this video a handful of times since it dropped, and it’s easily this week’s best.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Rebeka - Unconscious

Wampire - Giants

Young the Giant - Crystallized
