Top Music Videos

FRINGE MUSIC FIX selects their top five music videos of the week, as well as a strong list of honourable mentions. Read below to see why the videos were picked, or just sit down, hit play, and watch them all back-to-back in playlist form here.

King Krule and director Jamie-James Medina pay tribute to acclaimed suspense film director Alfred Hitchcock with the video for “A Lizard State." As would be expected with an ode to Hitchcock, the video is shot in black and white, and features an energetic performance by the young British genre-defying artist, seamlessly enveloped between an actual intro and outro from an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Both sequences see our leads, Krule and Hitchcock, in similar gravity defying situations, giving the video a clever cohesiveness.

Not unlike director Johnathan Turner’s first video for "Shape" by electronic pop artist Glasser, this second video features Glasser front woman Cameron Mesirow interacting with warped and distorted computer rendered matter. This time, the action finds Mesirow racing against time as her home is slowly consumed by virtual water and other peculiar rendered fluids. It’s a strange and visually appealing display that fits well with all the highly stylistic work Turner has done for Glasser and the visual aspects of her Interiors album, including its cover art.

Trentemøller’s video for “Gravity” stars Oscar Isaac, of the Coen Brother’s film Inside Llewyn Davis, as he offers himself to commuters as an extra passenger to allow them to get into car pool lanes (all for $10). Throughout the course of the video, Isaac meets and travels with a cast of troubled and eccentric individuals, most of which whom grow increasingly tiring and irritating. The video is a unique accompaniment to Trentemøller’s pulsing electronic track and thanks to some excellent direction and performances, easily one of this week’s strongest efforts.

NYSU directs the carefully-crafted video for Wild Beasts' “Wanderlust” in which we are introduced to four characters - the Thief, the Good Lady, the Quarterback, and the Girl - all pursued by the inherent fears and anxieties in their lives. A skillfully shot and memorable music video.

The music video for “All Wash Out” is a special one indeed. Originally submitted as an entry for a contest the band held for fans to produce a music video for their track “All Wash Out," this video was not the winner, but was later deemed an official one after the band received a letter from director Sophia Glaser’s sister Luna, informing them that some time after the video had been completed, 20-year-old Sophia had suffered a brain hemorrhage one night while she slept, and never awoke. The video also stars Sophia, as the actress originally slated to appear had to cancel. The video serves as a heartbreaking tribute to the beautiful and young Sophia, whose talent clearly could have taken her far. The lush and beautiful video was played at Sophia’s memorial service.
