Top Music Videos

Each week, FRINGE MUSIC FIX culls the latest music video releases, carefully selecting the most bizarre, provocative and remarkable videos from across the world.

It’s not uncommon and certainly interesting to see thematic and stylistic patterns emerge throughout a given week’s video releases. While these patterns are certainly coincidental, sometimes they can be too noticeable not to mention. A significant number of exceptional music videos released this week and included in my shortlist (with the exception of Badboxes’ “The Mystery”) fell into one of two categories, sometimes both: “stop-motion animation” and “ridiculously sexy." Sit back, relax, and open your mind’s eye, things are about to get interesting. The following are our selections for the week ending February 23rd, 2014.

Ronya’s “Flame” definitely falls into the category of “ridiculously sexy." It’s a steamy video that features beautiful women engaging in acts of caressing and other intimate gestures with one another. The video sees the interaction take place across a variety of settings, from a leather couch to scenes shot underwater.

“All I Want” is one of the sexiest music videos I’ve seen in a while. The video sees model Kasimara Miller daydreaming about erotic encounters with actor Tarquin P. Wilding, who happens to be the grandson of Elizabeth Taylor. My theory on Kasimara’s domestic neglect seen in the cluttered state of her apartment is her preoccupation with her lust-filled imagination. It’s a tactfully executed and undeniable arousing music video.

Badboxes’ video for “They Mystery” opens with an android like individual smashed to bits. As the video unravels we find a tale of romance that is soon met with tragedy when jealousy enters into our synthetic antagonist’s and his human love interest’s relationship. The video is shot in hazy black and white and features some subtle yet intriguing visual effects.

“Coming Through” is a surreal and highly sexual outing which presents various fetishes loosely relating to S&M and food play. The video is shot in a highly stylistic manner and includes an unforgettable and peculiar collection of scenes some of which include furniture roleplaying and a model under a rug. B-Rock and JPatt of the Knocks both endure a strange series of odd engagements at the hands of a group of insanely beautiful, scantily clad models which include being the duo being tied up, gagged and slapped. The video is also one of two in my top 5 that include both themes of sexuality and stop-motion animation.

“Peppermint” is a visual fanfare of mixed media animation shot primarily using a stop motion technique. Married tightly with the synths and beat of the track it accompanies, the video features a rapid fire and impressively edited series of scenes that range from a caricature of female who may represent guest vocalist Jessie Ware to the inexplicable image of a baby whose head, at one point, inexplicably transforms into a skull. It’s certainly a video that must be seen to appreciate.
