Each week, FRINGE MUSIC FIX culls the latest music video releases, carefully selecting the most bizarre, provocative, and remarkable videos from across the world.

Sit back, relax, and open your mind’s eye; things are about to get interesting. The following are our selections for the week ending August 17th, 2014.

Future pop duo De?j?a are the first of three Australian artists who've made our list this week. Their dark and sinister Zachary McSweeney and Rromarin Rayn directed video for “Heart,” which is a disturbed, serpentine themed stunner. The explosive video features fast paced cuts, flashing club styled lighting, and an ominous yet charismatic performance from frontwoman Rromarin, who is seen in the video wearing reptilian contact lenses and her hair dyed white. Her bold appearance is one of the video’s most remarkable visual elements. This highly stylistic visual may be void of narrative, but that certainly won’t prevent it from infiltrating your nightmares in the very best of ways.

Aussie up and comers The Kite String Tangle further cement their emerging status with their impressive visual directed by Jason Bock. The cinematic video explores three distinct phases of a relationship through the use of extreme close-up shots - the initial meeting of a man and woman, their most intimate private moments, and then a more tragic post-relationship meet-up. The video’s execution is both visually appealing yet also strikes an emotional chord for viewers.

Lance Drake directs the visual effects laden music video for Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello’s “Wasted Love."  The song and video feature Dougy Mandagi of The Temper Trap, who aside from a brief cameo by Steve Angello in the video’s final sequence, is the artist featured as the video’s main artist. The video’s concept explores what Angello has referred to as "the video game of life," with individuals taking turns assuming the role of the main player in a digital alternate reality setting. The whole thing is a very visceral experience and will definitely appeal to fans of sci-fi and anime a like.

Monument marks the third single and music video released for the Royksopp & Robyn mini album collaboration “Do It Again." The meditative and airy visual directed by Max Vitali and produced by the Creators Project is a perfect counterpart for the noticeably less dance-centric single. To give the video a sense of spaciousness and altered gravity, video cameras were equipped with a wire based system. Conceptually, the visual is intent on developing the idea of the space around us, both real and fabricated. Vitali described this concept as being a parallel with the sounds Royksopp and Robyn have created for their album, which combine real sounds with the digital compositions they create using computers.

When three individuals known for their outstanding work with music videos join forces, it’s easy to expect nothing but greatness. The outstanding music video for Chet Faker’s “Gold” definitely does not disappoint. Director Hiro Murai has been on a directorial hot streak this year, releasing amazing videos for Childish Gambino's "Sweatpants," Spoon's "Do You," and Queens of the Stone Age's "Smooth Sailing." Choreographer Ryan Heffington, whose work can be seen on what will likely be my favourite music video of the year in Sia’s “Chandelier," is also responsible for the sweet moves in Hercules & Love Affair’s “I Try To Talk to You” and Arcade Fire’s "We Exist."  Chet Faker is also no stranger to the music video format, having now had three of his songs encapsulated in beautiful visuals the likes of “1988” and “Talk Is Cheap."  The mesmerizing video for “Gold” is a perfect fusion of the talent’s of all three individuals involved in it’s conception and utilizes both minimalism and dance to enchant it’s way our subconscious. The video opens on a dimly light highway shot at night which eventually focuses on three gorgeous, stylishly dressed females on roller skates performing an engaging synchronized dance/roller skating routine. Much like many of Murai’s videos, the video features a final twist conclusion, which in this case, reveals that the sultry trio is in fact a vision seen by Chet Faker after succumbing to the injuries and confusion brought on by a car accident.
