Introducing a New Project: The Art of Music Videos

Last month I gave a talk at the Sprockets music video festival in Athens, GA, and one of things I covered is the idea of the triple-faceted nature of music videos. Music videos are the only art form that simultaneously have elements of commercials, music, and film. Each one of those elements bring interesting and sometimes contradictory pieces to the table, and the tension that creates is the reason why music videos are such a unique and interesting art form.

The majority of the coverage around music videos focuses on the first two aspects: the commercial and the music. This makes sense, since many viewers come to music videos because of the artist involved - they're fans already or they are being recommended the music video a music blog that happens to include the video.

There is very little coverage dedicated exclusively to the film art of music videos. So today we're launching a side project that we're really excited about - the Art of Music Videos.

Currently living on Facebook and Twitter, the Art of Music Videos does one thing and one thing only - provides stills of music videos that we find beautiful or striking in some way. We provide the names of director, DP,  colorist, and other applicable positions (where available, and where we have room) as well as a link to watch the video. That's it!

If you are a fan of music videos and film, we think you'll enjoy pausing to admire a piece of a music video without the music.

If you have a suggestion for a shot, send it to shots@imvdb.com.
