Introducing Music Video Playlists

The goal at IMVDb has not just been to build a database of music videos, but to use that database to create new ways to find and watch music videos. There was a time when discovering new music videos meant turning on the TV and watching whatever Carson Daly wanted you to watch. In the internet era of music videos, the experience is usually marked by a single viewing - you watch a video on a blog post or on social media, and that's it.

Today we're really excited to announce our first step in creating new ways for people to discover music videos: music video playlists. The idea is pretty simple: a music video playlist is just like a music playlist, just with music videos. You can skip around or just let them music videos play one after the other. Here's what one looks like:

Types of Playlists

There are two types of playlists: Smart Playlists and Custom Playlists. Smart Playlists automatically fill with videos from particular artists, directors, or production companies in the database. You can start one via the black "Start a Playlist" button on the artist, director, and production company pages. When a new video is added that fits into the playlist, it'll be added automatically.

Here's the smart playlist for Tegan and Sara.

Then there are there are Custom Playists, and we're really excited about these because anyone can make one. Just click on Video at the top of the page (if you're logged in) and select New Playlist. You can create one right there. If you manage a page on IMVDb, you can even mark it as created by that page. You can make you playlists private as well if you want to keep them to yourself (like the "Music Videos Featuring Demin" playlist that Doug made that we're keeping on the down-low).

You can create a playlist about just about anything - it could be music videos that have a certain theme, or just music videos that you like. Here's a playlist by directing duo LAMAR+NIK of some recent music videos they are fans of:

You can find fun playlists that we've selected as awesome here, and we'll add to this collection as we get more. You can find your own playlists by going to.Videos -> My Playlists.

We're really excited about this feature - and excited to see what playlists are created. Tell us about the playlists your create by tweeting them to @theimvdb!
