This post is part of a series called "Music Video Relapse", where we revisit a released music video to see how it's doing. Weekdays at noon EST.

Many an artist has tried their hand at the tour music video with mediocre results. We're talking about videos that are put together our of documentary-style footage while on tour - it usually comes off as a little self-indulgent and dull. (A famous example of this is U2's 1988 feature film Rattle and Hum, which in retrospect is not that bad.)

Today we're checking out an example of a tour music video that went very right - 2010's "Soundtrack 2 My Life" by Kid Cudi, directed by Jason Goldwatch:

This video is part of a few Kid Cudi videos that were put together out of footage that Goldwatch shot for a documentary (see "Mojo So Dope" and "cudderisback" for the others). "Soundtrack 2 My Life" follows Cudi around on tour as he performs and goofs around with light sabers. It benefits from Goldwatch's fantastic editing, which does a great job of pairing the right visuals with Cudi's ultra-personal lyrics, turning it into something more than just the normal tour video of soundchecks and backstage hijinks.

Come to think of it, we interviewed Jason Goldwatch in mid-2011 and dicussed this video - you can find that interview here.

As we've covered on the blog before, ABBA has an interesting history with music videos, using the form back in the late 1970s to spread their music to overseas markets. The videos, while pretty primitive, are well-done for their time, and they are almost all on their ABBA Vevo account,… Read More

When a video gets pulled off of YouTube, they usually tell you who made them do it. Usually it's a record label, but sometimes it's a random name. For instance, Iggy Azalea used to have a video called "Pu$$y," but it now says "This video is no longer available because… Read More

People whose jobs revolve around throwaway "viral" stories hit pay dirt last week when someone noticed that a radio station in LA was playing Nelly's 2002 hit "Hot In Herre" over and over again. This is apparently relatively standard procedure for radio stations undergoing a format change (it has since… Read More
