Music Video Relapse: "Call On Me" (2004) by Eric Prydz
Posted by Adam Fairholm on September 18, 2013 in Music Video RelapseStaff Post |
What I am about to say may shock you, but generally people enjoy sexy ladies in workout gear. Remember "Asphyxiation" by Autoerotique with the dodgeball and the underboob? What about Sleepwalker by Moon Duo? Of course, there is also the granddaddy of them all - "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John.
But we're not watching any of those today. Today we're watching one of my favorites from this genre - 2004's "Call on Me" by Eric Prydz, directed by Huse Monfaradi.
What I enjoy about this video is its simplicity. There is no plot besides the simple fact that a woman walks into an exercise room to lead a group of people in what can only be described as a workout routine heavy in pelvic thrusts. This group is entirely women except for one man, who alternates between amazed and extremely happy as he watches our workout leader gyrate and thrust. The feeling is mutual, and at the end they meet up with an embrace that says "the sex will happen".
This video caused quite a stir when it was released - so much so that some enterprising person somewhere along the line suggested making a whole line of workout DVDs with the same people from the video, and it was so. (There is even, hilariously, one dude).
Then, somewhere along the way someone decided there needed to be a terrible, infintely less sexy version with porn stars, and it was so.
And hey Glee even got in on the action for some reason.
This is one of those videos that has gone past being "parodied" - it's more of a cultural touchstone for "working out in a goofy way with pelvic thrusts". Seriously, you could watch parodies of this all day pretty much, and many of them are just dudes.
But to me, the best version out there of the "Call On Me" video is one where a guy just cut the one dude in it out entirely so its just the ladies. Ever the bastion of raw honesty, here's a YouTube comment from this edit of the video that says it all:
The guys scenes ruined the sexiness of the video. What were they thinking? It makes you feel so? awkward when you have your dick in your hand and it shows that dude.
That's all I have to say about that.

Music Video Relapse: "The Last Video" (2004) by ABBA

As we've covered on the blog before, ABBA has an interesting history with music videos, using the form back in the late 1970s to spread their music to overseas markets. The videos, while pretty primitive, are well-done for their time, and they are almost all on their ABBA Vevo account,… Read More

When a video gets pulled off of YouTube, they usually tell you who made them do it. Usually it's a record label, but sometimes it's a random name. For instance, Iggy Azalea used to have a video called "Pu$$y," but it now says "This video is no longer available because… Read More
Music Video Relapse: "Hot In Herre" (2002) by Nelly

People whose jobs revolve around throwaway "viral" stories hit pay dirt last week when someone noticed that a radio station in LA was playing Nelly's 2002 hit "Hot In Herre" over and over again. This is apparently relatively standard procedure for radio stations undergoing a format change (it has since… Read More
