Music Video Relapse: "1980" (2007) by Dirt Nasty

If you guys are fans of Vine, you are probably familiar with Simon Rex, who took to the medium pretty soon after its initial release. He's recently stopped making vines it seems, but he used to make a lot of them and they almost always involved him taking him shirt off to play his "gay twin", Steven". Seriously, he'd take his shirt off in a mall for a vine.
If you thought that intro was terrible, then let's watch a video that has a great intro and stars Simon Rex as his rap alter ego Dirt Nasty - 2007's "1980", directed by Nicholaus Goossen.
I mentioned there was a great intro to this video, and in it we see Dirt Nasty in the booth, rapping about some very serious and mystical stuff. "These are the ones that shine upon thine meridian" is a choice line - there are definitely some Lord of the Rings references too. Needless to say, this is not the Dirt Nasty we know and love.
Andre Legacy stops him right there though, and asks him what's up. Turns out Dirty Nasty has quit smoking weed and its cleared up his mind. He now has the capacity to think about Gondor and all that stuff. Then, in what may be one of the great examples of friends enabling other friends, Andre Legacy hands Dirt a joint and away we go.
The song starts with the a Jack Nicholson line from As Good As It Gets, and launches into a song about, as the title might imply, 1980.
Speaking of the 1980s, its really tough for a video to hit a changeover year since those are almost aways really culturally ambiguous. References like the DeLorean DMC-12 (which didn't go into production until 1981), pagers (which were mostly used for short-range professional communication in 1980), Alf (1986-1990), and Ghostbusters (1984) are slightly later if you want to be a giant pain in the ass and get technical about it.
Luckily, director Nicholaus Goossen keeps the nostaliga stuff very light and mostly lets Rex take the spotlight. That leads to some memorable, if sometimes odd, moments such as when Dirt slides a handgun into the mouth of a sexy lady. And if you want lots of Dirt Nasty with cocaine power all over his face, you've come to the right place.
There's also the Redfoo cameo in this, pre-LMFAO being a huge success. Hi Redfoo.
Let's all hope that Dirt Nasty never goes off weed again and stops kicking those old Dirty Nasty tunes about getting your dick sucked.

As we've covered on the blog before, ABBA has an interesting history with music videos, using the form back in the late 1970s to spread their music to overseas markets. The videos, while pretty primitive, are well-done for their time, and they are almost all on their ABBA Vevo account,… Read More

When a video gets pulled off of YouTube, they usually tell you who made them do it. Usually it's a record label, but sometimes it's a random name. For instance, Iggy Azalea used to have a video called "Pu$$y," but it now says "This video is no longer available because… Read More
Music Video Relapse: "Hot In Herre" (2002) by Nelly

People whose jobs revolve around throwaway "viral" stories hit pay dirt last week when someone noticed that a radio station in LA was playing Nelly's 2002 hit "Hot In Herre" over and over again. This is apparently relatively standard procedure for radio stations undergoing a format change (it has since… Read More
