Does Amazon Have A Patent On Cyc Music Videos?

Last week, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted Amazon a patent on a fairly common studio arrangement of shooting a subject on a white backdrop. Complete with images and a whole bunch of words (of which we read several), Patent No.US 8,676,045 B1 gives detailed instructions on how to achieve a seamless image that looks just like almost every other product image you’ve seen on the internet ever. While this studio arrangement is widely used for product photography, it appears to be a pretty standard arrangement for shooting anything on a white cyc – a technique that is used frequently in the music video world. While this patent might not have a direct impact on the music video industry, it could for anyone who uses this studio arrangement. Either way, this seems like a pretty strange thing to be granted a patent for, and we doubt people are stoked about it.

Do you use this studio arrangement? Is this patent going to stop you from using it again? Let us know in the comments!
