There is this thing that happens in hip hop where if you do a music video with Hiro Murai you’re required to just keep making awesome music videos with him. It’s a trend that was established by Earl Sweatshirt with “Chum” and “Hive,” and has now moved onto Childish Gambino with “3005” and their latest collaboration, “Sweatpants.” All of the aforementioned videos take place in a dreamlike world, with the Earl videos living in a more nightmarish place, and the Gambino videos existing in that weird grey area that isn't quite a nightmare but also isn't fun or enjoyable. “Sweatpants” opens with Childish walking into a diner that has a similarly run down vibe as the carnival in “3005.” Ari Robbins’ steadicam follows Gabino through the diner and then out the back door, which is when things start to turn from odd and vibey to surreal. Gambino walks back in through the back door, which suddenly becomes the front door, starting him on the same Ari Robbins stedicam path, only this time some of the people in the diner are him too, including some of the ladies (TIL Donald Glover is so cool he even looks cool in a dress). He makes the round again, and this time everyone in the diner is Donald. The video abruptly cuts, the sound of loading can be heard, and we suddenly pick up Gambino in a fogged out, drifting, orange and red forest singing a different song but wearing the same clothes. It’s a perfectly unexpected ending to an already wavy video.

”Sweatshirt” was produced by Jason Colon for Doomsday Entertainment and can be found on the album because the internet.
