Brandon Dermer

There is a lot of crazy stuff on YouTube. Like the channel csknives, aka Cold Steel Knives, which features founder Lynn Thompson and a bunch of other dudes slicing things in half with giant swords and sometimes slightly less giant swords. We’ve been watching Lynn chop pigs and meat filled boots in half for years now, so we were super excited to see him star in "That's On Me" by Wavves, directed by Brandon Dermer. So excited, that we had to talk to Brandon about the video and working with Lynn.

Doug: This video stars Lynn Thompson, founder of Cold Steel Knives, did the concept of this video basically start with him?

Brandon: Yes. Like many other kids of the interweb generation, I've been obsessed with his Cold Steel demo videos for years.

Doug: What was it about this song that you thought would work well with Lynn?

Brandon: The song rocks... and so does Lynn.

Doug: Was Wavves familiar with him before the video?

Brandon: I can't say for sure, you would have to ask Nathan... but considering the way they responded to my treatment, I think yes.

Doug: I'm assuming Lynn provided his own swords?

Brandon: Oh yeah. Every sword, axe, hammer in the video are Cold Steel products.... and they rule!

Doug: Was it a collaborative process on what types of things he would slash, what was that based on?

Brandon: 100%. I made a wish list of items to hack in half, then Lynn and I got on the phone and discussed each chop in depth.

Doug: Did Lynn have any production pointers when it came to shooting him chopping things up?

Brandon: Stay out of his way when he's chopping.

Doug: Have people reacted to the video like you thought they would?

Brandon: Yes. They either love it, hate it, or have absolutely no idea what the hell is going on... and that's exactly what I wanted with this video.
