“2 On” by Tinashe ft. Schoolboy Q takes the idea of a choreographed club music video and lets it build out gradually throughout the piece. Choreographed by JaQuel Knight, choreographer for several iconic music videos including “Single Ladies” by Beyonce, the viewer knows going in that this is going to be a dance video, but director Hannah Lux Davis decides to build a story around the choreography rather than to just include it in the video. In fact, outside of a few performance inserts, the bulk of the choreography appears in the back half of the video.

We begin with Tinashe dressed casually in a studio with a group of female dancers. After a bit of hugging and hanging out, the group gets up and begins to start working on their dance moves – with breaks in between to take selfies and fight with giant letter balloons. Eventually Tinashe and the girls end up grabbing some fancier, more coordinated outfits and changing into them. The ladies then hop into an elevator and by the time they get off, their attitudes have switched from warm-up mode to game time. Once Schoolboy Q makes an appearance, we have officially entered into music video mode, we even get a quick shot of a slate in Q’s hand to solidify it. The line between the dance inserts and the narrative is now gone and it’s time for everyone to party and eat cake.

“2 On” was produced by Brandon Bonfiglio for London Alley Entertainment and can be downloaded as a single now.
