Each week, FRINGE MUSIC FIX culls the latest music video releases, carefully selecting the most bizarre, provocative, and remarkable videos from across the world.

Sit back, relax, and open your mind’s eye; things are about to get interesting. The following are our selections for the week ending March 30th, 2014.

Directed by Ian & Cooper, “Good Mistake” is a gloomy exploration of the sleep deprived mindset of a trucker.  One night, while stationed at a mysterious truck stop, feelings of regret and memories of past mistakes come flooding back to haunt him.

While “Coffee” may take place in various settings, including a hall and a house party which later shifts to an outdoor locale, what remains constant throughout the clip is the inclusion of communal dancing. Dan Huiting employs slow motion and tracking shots to give the video additional style and an engaging sense of space. Like the song, the video finds a unique way to combine many ideas, themes and moods together, to create something fresh and interesting.

The Hylas Films directed music video for King Kahn & The Shrines’ “Born To Die” is a dark and surreal homage to the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky (Santa Sangre, The Holy Mountain, El Topo). The video includes scenes inspired by the notion of the upper class’ relentless desire to exterminate the innocent throughout history, be it via firing squad, electric chair, or by other means. The video casts Kahn himself as a Minotaur.

Painter Hieronymus Bosch’s unique vision of hell is given a Terry Gilliam style animated treatment by director Lee Stringle in the music video for Odonis Odonis’ cathartic track, “Order In The Court”. The disturbing visual depicts the gardens of the netherworld blossoming around bird-like beings who spend their mornings torturing and devouring humans whole.

With “Simple And Sure”, BANGS further builds upon their remarkable portfolio.  The BANGS team have most recently directed exceptional videos for bands such as Mutual Benefit, Autre Ne Veut, and Zola Jesus. For The Pains of Being Pure At Heart’s fetching track, Allie Avital Tsypin utilises an animated-GIF like effect to tell the tale of a dinner party that eventually takes a dark twist. When asked about the video’s conceptual inspiration, Pains’ front man Kip Berman had this to say; “I'm taken aback at how many online outlets now reduce their content to a series of GIFs, assuming a minute long video or a single paragraph of text to be too burdensome... We're as much prisoners of our need for constant distraction and instant sensation as the trapped guests at the dinner party”.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Talos - Tethered Bones

Bleachers - I Wanna Get Better

Small Black - Real People (ft. Frankie Rose)
