People love giving MTV crap about their abandonment of music videos, but how soon we all forget that MTV had a whole show that ran for 10 years that was just about making music videos. It was called "Making The Video" and although no new shows are being produced, it is a pretty interesting chronicle of the early to mid 2000s music video era.
So for today's throw back Thursday let's check an episode out! This is the Making the Video for "Toxic" by Britney Spears in 2003, directed by Joseph Kahn.
A few years away from her public breakdown in 2007, this behind the scenes short is squarely focused on Britney who pulls out ounce of folksy hostess she has in her, even going so far as to open the show by telling us "the name of my song is 'Toxic'", talent show style. We meet some other players in the video, but basically its Joseph and Britney taking us through. We even see Britney watch some of her old "Making of" videos and remark that she is "retarded."
Unfortunately we don't get to see the filming of probably the most famous shot from this video - Britney Spears in her diamond costume. We are told she is too naked to be seen in a behind the scenes context. That's okay though, because we do get to see Tyson Beckford explain that he has a picture of Spears on his fridge, and then later we get to see Spears awkwardly present Beckford with a cake. That's just as good!
