The Most Popular Music Videos Released This Week (5/23)

If there is anything we can learn about music videos from the past two weeks, it’s that soccer sells. Although at this time last week Pitbull’s “We Are One (Ole Ola)” music video (the official music video of the 2014 FIFA World Cup) had only about 350k views, it ends this week with over 27 million. Since it was released last Friday, that video won’t be found on this list, however it did sit at the top of the music video charts for most of this week. In 2010, Shakira’s "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" was the official music video for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and not to be outdone by her own game, has this week released a music video for the song “La La La (Brazil 2014)," which is filled it with a ton of professional soccer stars. This is actually the third music video for this song released this month, with Anthony Mandler directing non-soccer versions in both English and Spanish. However, the soccer version (complete with repurposed lyrics about, you guessed it, soccer) has nearly tripled the view count of the other two videos in just one day, making it the most viewed music video of this week with over 11 million views.

There were plenty of non-soccer related music videos released this week as well, including two fake movie trailers! One fake movie trailer was directed by Melina Matsoukas for “Part II (On The Run)” by Jay Z and Beyonce (and featured several a-list actors), and the other fake movie trailer was a comic book movie spoof from director Isaac Rentz for ”Don’t Stop” by 5 Seconds Of Summer. Jason Derulo’s Vine anthem “Wiggle” was given the Collin Tilley treatment this week, Lea Michele got the Hannah Lux Davis treatment for “On My Way,” and as always Die Antwoord got the crazy person treatment in their video for "Pitbull Terrier."

Some other highlights were The Lonely Island’s return to SNL with their video for “Hugs,” M.I.A.'s return to the director’s chair with her video for “Double Bubble Trouble,” and Eif Rivera and 50 Cent's weekly return to this list with their video for “Twisted.” With eight of this weeks top ten coming in at over a million views, there is a lot of popular stuff to check out on this playlist of the top 25 videos of the week, so before you head to Applebee’s for the night, make your way over to the playlist and check it out!
